A restaurant in a church in Amsterdam: Brasserie Lenny’s setting

A former church, a bright conservatory and French dishes

Façade, terrace and former church tower of Brasserie Lenny in Amsterdam East

Amsterdam has dozens of former churches that have found new uses: libraries, apartments and concert halls. A church converted into a full restaurant with a terrace is rarer.

Brasserie Lenny occupies the former Christus Koningkerk building at James Wattstraat 56-58 in Amsterdam East, part of Chassé Hotel Residency. The brasserie combines a bright conservatory, green wall, bar and terrace with French dishes. Het Parool wrote about the setting and concept.

What the space brings

The brasserie is more than the story of a former church: you also experience the bright conservatory, green wall and bar. Lunch inside feels different from an afternoon on the terrace. The building and interior give each moment its own atmosphere, without requiring a formal dinner.

Lenny Balkissoon, owner of Chassé Hotel Residency, spent three years looking for a use for this building. Ramon Beuk brought the concept. Het Parool described the result as a “blank canvas” finally filled.
